Congestion Charge (Score & Parts) (Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band Series)

Congestion Charge (Score & Parts) (Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band Series) Review

As with all modern cities, London is overcrowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a 'Congestion Charge', and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Here are Londoners attempting to go about their business in the face of overwhelming odds...

This piece is the final movement of Nigel Hess' New London Pictures which represents elements of London in the 21st Century.

Penlee (Score & Parts) (Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band Series)

Penlee (Score & Parts) (Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band Series) Review

To some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory.

Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St Michaels Church, Newquay (UK), on 30th December 2008.

The Dreaded Groove and Hook (Score) (Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band)

The Dreaded Groove and Hook (Score) (Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band) Review

Simon Dobson's The Dreaded Groove and Hook, is an up tempo acidjazz work for brass band, drawing its influences from bands such as Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared around the band soloists and accompanied by 'Stuart Zendoresque' bass lines, whilst the hook, in pop terms, is the catchy bit of the song. This happens when the whole band join to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a kind of chorus to the jazz like verses. Percussion and soloists alike will have plenty to do in this piece!

The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their program for the Brass In Concert Championships in November 2008.

Take the Lead -- Jazz (Book & CD) (Faber Edition: Take the Lead)

Take the Lead -- Jazz (Book & CD) (Faber Edition: Take the Lead) Review

Take the Lead is a terrific series of books for all instrumentalists, young and old. Eight jazz classics are arranged for each instrument as stand-alone solos, or all the instruments can play together. Each song includes chord symbols in concert pitch for use by piano or guitar, or the player can use the full backing track from the CD as accompaniment. The CD also includes tuning notes and full version demonstration tracks of each song to help each musician learn the song. It's a great all-around package at a great price, and perfect for the band student who is looking for more music to play, especially as an introduction to jazz.

Kennan: Sonata for Bb Trumpet and Piano ~ The Revised 1986 Edition (Piano Part with Pull-out Part for Bb Trumpet) (Contemporary Works for Brass Instruments)

Kennan: Sonata for Bb Trumpet and Piano ~ The Revised 1986 Edition (Piano Part with Pull-out Part for Bb Trumpet) (Contemporary Works for Brass Instruments) Review

The Revised 1989 Edition (Piano Part with Pull-out Part for Bb Trumpet). From the Introduction: The Sonata for Trumpet and Piano was commissioned by the National Association of Schools of Music and first published in 1956. The present revised version differs from the original one in the following respects: Passages that involve uneven groupings (5/8.7/8, etc.) or segments of varying lengths have been renotated using their "true" meter signatures rather than in a consistent meter with irregular beaming or accents. Although the latter notation was once felt to be easier to read, it tends to seem unnatural and even confusing to today's performers, for whom uneven and changing meters have long since become routine. The coda of the first movement, which the composer came to feel was too extended and repetitive, has been shortened somewhat. This change also reduces the tendency of that movement to seem disproportionately long in relation to the others. Metronome indications, which were originally about one notch too fast (because of a faulty metronome used in determining them) have been corrected. Portions of the piano part have been altered slightly. for reasons too various lo detail here. "In addition to four LP recordings of the Sonata issued some years ago, there is now a recording by Raymond Mase. Trumpet, and David Pearl, piano, on a compact disc entitled "Trumpet in our time" (Summit Records, DCD 148). Kent Kennan, January 1997
